about

A Word from Johnny:

“The Killer Of Highway 64” The idea for this song is like a ghost that has haunted me for years. When Lowery and I moved from Redlands CA to Richmond to start working together there had indeed been a serial killer on the loose in VA. People were talking about bodies being discovered along the highway that runs from Richmond to the sea through vast woods and wilderness. I never knew the specifics, but having a life long obsession with crime, I just started making it up as I wrote the song years later. The three characters kind of tell the story so I’ll leave it up to listeners to make what they wish from that. I like that the musical bed shifts back and forth to form a backdrop to it all. I get to play the narrater, the detective and I like that too.

Phil Broste (Producer):

This was the first song Johnny played for me and it had me from line one. From that moment the goal for me was to make production feel as cinematic as lyrics. It’s a song with scenes... now we’re tracking behind the detective’s car... now we’re with him in the hotel room with his femme fatal... now looking through the wilderness for clues... I wanted the listener to feel it in the music. There is an echo that is literally the sound of an open forest, a bit of my past as a film sound designer coming through the mix.

lyrics

There’s a waitress at The Village
She’s plying me with wine.
But I’m not here to fall in love
People I’m here to solve a crime.

I’m as bent as the River James
Tryin to understand the pain
Of the killer of Highway 64
There’s a killer on Highway 64
From Bundy to the Zodiac
We’ve seen it all before
And people we don’t have to take this anymore.

I learned my skills at Quantico,
Like Mister Douglas in his day
Before the age of profiling,
Data bases, DNA
Pushed up against the door frame,
Hey, I’m an open minded man
She pinned my wrists above my head
I like a lady with a plan.

Hey, I’m as bent as the River James…

(Guitar solo)

Foggy woods and footprints
Tidewater and the moon.
I’m coming for you, bastard
The puzzle solving soon.
Plaster casts of tire tracks
Threads of fabric proof
I gotta stay focused on the job!
She kissed my neck up on the roof

I’m as bent as the River James…
